EXPANDED PAINTING

commercial printing film, interface frabric, light, 2022

The work investigates the fundamentals of painting: light, colour, image - through expanded painting. Light is used to create an expansion of colour into space, as it filters through the commercial printing film holding ghost prints of the public's (private) images.

Light is used to create an expansion of colour into space, as it filters through the film, projecting colour blocks onto suspended white interfacing fabric, and leaving only the idea of trace from the original images - investigating the expansion of a deconstructed image.

Gentle air movement creates ambient rustling sounds from the plastic film and moves the fabric sheets slowly – putting the work in constant flux as colours and shapes converse and evolve.

This work is not only a conceptual exploration of the material properties of painting, but also engages in themes of privacy, memory, and value.
