中國繩結之建、解構
CONSTRUCTION AND DECONSTRUCTION OF CHINESE KNOTS
thread, 2024
Exhibited as part of dwelling / belonging at Firstdraft Gallery, Australia.
Cultural identities of contemporary citizens are increasingly intercultural, existing concurrently across borders. With this, we are left with the burden or gift, to navigate and build our own identities – informed equally by what was shared, and what was lost.
Being multi-cultural, this work investigates the complexities of King’s sense of cultural identity, belonging, and understanding. The work presents a series of Chinese knots (中國結) at various stages of deconstruction and construction – ranging from individual threads, to completed knots – made from the same string (>120m total). Presented in a grid, the sense of the infinite forms the same string can take is emphasised, revealing the messy space that exists in-between the binary outcomes of deconstruction and construction.
The forms embody the immeasurable, chaotic space that exists when cultural identities have multiple constituents.
Identities can be multi-faceted, contemporaneous, fragmented and complete in different capacities; protean as they are informed or disorientated throughout life.
