2001-2021
copper, 2024
2001 – 2021 is an urn for my late father, crocheted from copper wire stripped from inherited electrical cords.
The urn was created in an effort to combat the incorporeal nature of my father’s absence and create something tangible during a liminal phase of my life.
However, in the process of constructing the urn and salvaging and preparing the materials, the weight of the artwork quickly shifted from the tangible outcome to the emotional labour and journey of the process.
The deconstruction of this mnemonic material -- STRIPPING, EXPOSING, DETANGLING, WINDING -- followed by the autonomous reconstruction -- KNOTTING, RE-TANGLING, ACCRETION, BUILDING -- was a metaphorical and experienced process of reconciling my grief.
Made by crocheting, the exclusively human craft facilitates a ceremonious labour. The entangled wires hold the evanescent moments I had while creating and reflecting. The urn’s value growing with the suffusion of emotional labour and love, holding within it the memories and relationship I had with my father.
The making of the work became an intimate performance, ritualistic in its repetition, concentration, and dedication over time.
